本书是《英国文明史》（多卷本）的首卷。《英国文明史》将英国文明的发展划分为融合、成长、释放、回归四大阶段，从崭新角度全景呈现英国文明的生命周期，在总体结构与内在品质上呈现出中国学人的话语体系、基本特征与中国风格。本书从总体上坚守以下品质：第一，英国文明史应该以英国文明内在的思想文化、以英国的民族精神为主线来书写，而不总是停留在英国的诸多社会现象的描写；第二，英国文明史必须对诸多英国文献、英国问题和英国现象拥有批判意识；第三，英国文明史是内涵多元、时域交叉、形态重叠式演进的历史；第四，英国文明史突出书写长时段与大趋势，也注重历史细节问题研究。
