一九二○年代中國許多來自農村破產仕紳階級的青年，流浪到了城市的最底層，迅速積累而成一股不容忽視的力量，瞿秋白將這群「異鄉人」命名為「薄海民」（Bohemian），在郁達夫的筆下則為「零餘者」，他們以文字驅遣內在的徬徨與孤獨，終而走上街頭的革命暴動，可以說是推動中國從五四「文學革命」轉向五卅「革命文學」的關鍵世代，也是現代中國的奠基者。

　　本書透過二十世紀中國最具代表性的兩座城市：北京和上海，試圖以此打開五四世代心靈深處「黑暗的閘門」之謎，揭示這群「薄海民」們徘徊在城／鄉之間充滿悲劇性的生命旅程，而現代城市究竟為他們帶來什麼樣的烏托邦願景？又如何讓漫遊其中的他們走出一條既希望又絕望，既浪漫又暴力，既抒情又血腥，從而矛盾糾葛陰影幢幢的文學之路？
